An embedded software house in St. Petersburg, Russia, is offering a high-reliability, small-footprint embedded Linux implementation that supports several 668-based CompuLab SBCs (single-board computers). Intrasoft's “IS Linux G686” OS uses JFS to minimize the risk of unrecoverable data loss, compared with ext3, according to the company.

IS Linux G686 is based on a 2.4-series Linux kernel, and can boot from PCMCIA-Flash or CompactFlash. Supported CompuLab boards include the CM-i686, PC104+ SB-i686, and ATX-i686. The OS has a footprint under 64MB, and supports the following hardware features and functions, according to Infrasoft:

• COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5
• LPT
• PS/2 Mouse, PS/2 Keyboard
• IDE (HDD, CD), Floppy
• LCD or CRT in graphic mode (X Window)
• Audio recording and playback
• 2 x integrated network interfaces
• Digital input-output (GPIO) — ADC — USB — PCMCI

Additional touted features include:

• JFS file system, with “original methods” of protecting system and user data from unexpected power cycles
• Custom boot scripts for faster launch
• Interactive login, or automated launch of user application in text or graphics mode
• Reasonable resource requirements
• Kernel optimized for each platform
• telnet, ssh, nfs
• Additional libraries and utilities on request
• OS customization available based on services/devices required by user
• Includes sample application, archive, and clone utilities

Infrasoft claims that practical applications of its JFS-based filesystem reduce the possibility of unrecovered data damages by “ten or even hundred times,” compared to Linux's standard ext3fs.

Availability

The IS Linux G686 appears to be available now, at an undisclosed price. Infrasoft also offers a G586 Linux OS product for CompuLabs's 586-series boards.

CompuLab typically ships Gentoo with its SBCs, suggesting Infrasoft's Gx86 implementations may be based on Gentoo filesystems.
