Lineo extends embedded Linux support for ARM cores

Jun 28, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Lineo has announced the addition of ARM core support to the company's Embedix product line. With this release, ARM cores are now supported within both Embedix Linux and Embedix uClinux. Lineo now supports the full spectrum of ARM CPU cores, including those with and without memory management units (MMUs).

Lineo CEO Bryan Sparks said “because the industry is migrating to system-on-chip based designs, which are high volume and low cost, ARM is a strategic processor family for us to support. Lineo is committed to providing the market with the premier Linux solutions for the microprocessors that are being deployed in embedded devices.”

ARM processors are particularly popular for system-on-chip solutions where an entire machine is built on a highly-integrated single chip. Devices deploying system-on-chip processors are highly integrated devices and internet appliances such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and vending machines.

Lineo's ARM expertise comes primarily from the recent merger with Rt-Control, the founders and maintainers of the popular uClinux operating system, a version of Linux for microcontrollers. Currently, Lineo technology supports the following microprocessors: ARM, Hitachi, MIPs, x86, PowerPC, ColdFire, i960 and Motorola 68K.
