Lineo proclaims unity of RTLinux and RTAI — sort of
Jun 12, 2000 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsThe newly formed Lineo Industrial Solutions Group today signaled its intention to guide the destiny of the real-time Linux market, by announcing a proposed common API for real-time Linux. The new API is supposed to provide developers the ability to use a common real-time API for development under both RTLinux and RTAI, the two most widely-used distributions of real-time Linux.
According to Lineo's Dave Beal, the API is similar to early forms of both the RTLinux and RTAI APIs and is implemented in a system by means of a “wrapper” which makes the differences between the APIs transparent. Compatibility with the Red Hat proposed EL/IX (Embedded Linux POSIX) might be supported in the future, but via a loadable module in a manner similar to the POSIX support currently available from Lineo Industrial Solutions Group. Further details are unavailable at this time.
The Lineo Industrial Solutions Group is a new unit recently formed with Lineo, based primarily on the company's recent Zentropix acquisition. The unit is chartered to focus on markets requiring real-time OS support, such as industrial control, military, and streaming media applications.
