Linux-based photoframe boasts WiFi, video support

Jan 11, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 7 views

AgfaPhoto is shipping a Linux-based digital photoframe developed by Sagem Communications and powered by Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC). The AgfaPhoto AF5080W is said to offer an 8-inch, 800×600 SVGA display, WiFi, and playback of MP3 music and MPEG 1/2/4 video.

Equipped with Freescale's media-friendly i.MX31 SoC, which has an ARM11 core running at 532MHz, the AF5080W is more versatile than previous AgfaPhoto AF50x photoframes. The AF5080W comes with 128MB of RAM, and offers WiFi, USB, and a 5-in-1 memory card reader that supports SD cards of up to 16GB.

The AF5080W offers animation-enhanced slide show displays using JPEG and other formats, as well as clock, calendar, alarm, and remote control functions. Audio and video playback capabilities are said to include formats used by reflex digital cameras, such as MJPEG, MPEG4, and H.264, as well as the ability to play MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos from a set-top box (STB). Unlike previous AgfaPhoto AF50x digital photoscreens, the “W” model offers a more stable tripod base.

Here are some AF5080W specs:

  • Processor — Freescale i.MX31 SoC with ARM11 core clocked at 532MHz
  • Memory — 128MB; 5-in-1 memory card reader supporting up to 16GB SD
  • Display — 8-inch, 800×600 SVGA
  • Images — JPEG, GIF, PNG, WMF
  • Audio — MP3, WMA
  • Video — H.264 AVI, MJPEG, MPEG-4 (and via networked STB, MPEG 1 and MPEG-2)
  • I/O — WiFi, USB
  • Features — slideshow, clock, calendar, alarm, and remote control
  • Frame — tripod base with three interchangeable veneers: brushed aluminium, black plastic, and wood effect

Stated Patrick Sevian, CEO of Sagem, “The AF5080W photoframe represents an important achievement derived from our strategic collaboration with Freescale. The maturity of the i.MX31 multimedia processor and its Linux environment shortened development cycles and enabled creation of a decidedly differentiated product.”

Availability

There was no information on the pricing or availability of the Agfaphoto AF5080W, which will initially go on sale in Europe, but will then be sold to a global audience. The product should eventually appear on AgfaPhoto's photoframe page where there is information on the earlier AF5080M, which lacks WiFi or video playback capabilities.
