The Register reports that iRiver has launched its embedded Linux-based portable multimedia player in the UK market. The PMP-120 and PMP-140 models offer 20GB and 40GB hard drives, respectively, and 3.5-inch LCD screens supporting video playback in a number of formats. The hardware appears to be identical to iRiver's Windows CE-based “PMC” (portable media center) devices, which are delayed until December.

iRiver launched the Linux-based PMP-120 and PMP-240 in the US in August. In October, a DigiTimes story noted that iRiver is building a very large plant in China, with the goal of entering the in-car entertainment market. iRiver has also announced the PMC-120, probably based on the same hardware as the Linux-based PMP-series devices, that will run Microsoft's “Portable Media Center” software platform.

The devices are available now in the UK at prices close to 500 GBP, according to The Register. iRiverAmerica, meanwhile, sells them direct for under $500.
