Wyse Technology has added optional support for DVD recording and playback technology to its IPV500 set-top box (STB) that supports Linux and is based on an Intel digital STB reference design. The new DVD support comes from Sonic Solutions' AuthorScript software.

The IPV500 targets original equipment manufacturers and original design manufacturers (OEM/ODM) developing consumer electronics products or introducing new services that stream media from the Web or a local server onto televisions in “digital living rooms.” Wyse plans to release the IPV500 with the option of adding Sonic's AuthorScript DVD technology this quarter to OEMs and ODMs.

The Wyse IPV500 set top box is based on a low-voltage Celeron processor running at 700MHz, supporting software codecs. It incorporates the Intel Architecture DSTB815 reference design for viewing and storing digital media. The IPV500 can be set up to run the Windows or Linux operating system; Sonic's AuthorScript family of video software supports both, as well.

“As consumers build libraries of valuable personal video, audio tracks, and photos on their set top box, they need to make safe backups, free up hard drive space for new content, and create personalized CDs and DVDs,” said Jim Taylor, general manager of Sonic's Advanced Technology Group.
