Linux Based Thin Server Family Unveiled
Nov 8, 1999 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 7 viewsFall COMDEX '99 — Moreton Bay announced the release of its NETtel 2520 and NETtel 2500 VPN Linux based Internet routers. These small, easy to connect intelligent router solutions are engineered to offer a simple, secure, and affordable extranet-friendly Virtual Private Network (VPN) for flat networks.
The NETtel router family runs an embedded Linux kernel. A development kit is available which enables customized code to be stored in flash memory and executed inside the NETtel. The code could be special encryption or authentication protocols or some local monitoring script where NETtel is used as a remote control device.
Bob Waldie, Managing Director of Moreton Bay, says his company's NETtel router family “is a designed to provide a highly sophisticated solution that is ease of use, so you don't need to be a network expert to get it up and running in minutes.” The user simply attaches the LAN and modem cables and configures IP addresses using a browser. “Businesses can connect to the Internet with a rock solid firewall solution, a VPN, remote access and security — all in one easy box,” continues Waldie.
The new NETtel routers utilize connection of remote PCs by using the standard VPN connection software provided as standard with Microsoft Windows clients (Win95, Win 98, Windows NT and Win2000) to set up a private network over the Internet. The NETtel family of routers also offer remote access ports so remote users can directly dial-in and connect to the office network. NETtel's dial-in users are authenticated with the lattest MS-CHAP2. NETtel also offers a suite of security and filtering features to ensure that Internet and remote access does not compromise the office network integrity.
“Companies need simplicity, security, and affordability for a successful remote access solution,” says Peter Cronk, Vice President of Business Development. “Our NETtel solution provides unmatched flexibility in interconnecting local devices and networks to the Internet. Each NETtel model has at least one Ethernet port to connect to the local network..” “Our NETtel family is intended to provide an attractive solution to support a broad range of industries and applications,” concludes Cronk.
Each NETtel model comes with serial ports that support external modems or ISDN T/As, which can be configured to provide either dial-on-demand Internet connection or dial-in-remote network access. The NETtel 2520 also provides a second Ethernet port which can be used to connect ADSL or cable modems to the Internet. The NETtel 2500 and 2520 VPN routers interconnect networks with the full range of operating environments – Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Solaris, Linux and more. They are available for shipment as of November 15th.
