Linux device platform gains search-oriented RDBMS
Jan 10, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsHitachi Embedded will spin a version of its lightweight embedded SQL RDBMS (relational database management system) specifically for Wind River's consumer device operating systems. The Entier RDBMS simplifies implementing responsive, natural searches in devices that manage complex digital content, according to Hitachi.
Hitachi says Entier offers two powerful, built-in features that help reduce the amount of application code that developers need to write in order to implement advanced, “natural” search functions in devices with complex digital content management requirements.
The first of Entier's advanced built-in search functions is progressive searching, in which the search is executed incrementally after each keystroke. The second is the ability to search “multidimensional” data using SQL. Hitachi explains, “By searching a variety of qualitative tags defined by the consumer, Entier can search for content that is 'more like this' — for example, finding music of a certain tempo, or a movie not too scary for young children.”

Hitachi shipped a Linux beta last summer, followed by a generic Linux release in September. More technical details about Entier can be found in our earlier coverage.
John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River, stated, “Entier's singular ability to provide a reliable, application-optimized data manager for consumer devices made it a clear choice.”
Availability
The Hitachi Entier data management solution will ship in Q1, 2007 for Wind River's Platform for Consumer Devices, Linux Edition, and in Q2, 2007 for the VxWorks Edition.
