Linux distro supports embedded, educational uses

Eagle Linux author and maintainer Michael P. Angelo announced the release of Eagle Linux 2.2, a Linux distribution which Angelo says can be useful for embedded Linux applications and educational purposes. The distribution is provided in the form of a freely available, open source document that includes detailed information on how to create a standalone floppy, CDROM, or embedded Linux system image, Angelo… said.

“With many companies moving to Linux as an embedded OS solution, there is a growing need for in-house and remote embedded Linux training,” noted Angelo. “The Eagle Linux documentation explains all the steps necessary to create a fully network capable Linux system image in less than 4MB.”

According to Angelo, Eagle Linux can help instructors teach embedded and standard Linux distribution design methodology, and can be used to create structured bootable embedded Linux courseware. Other applications for bootable Eagle Linux floppy or CDROM images are said to include specialized dedicated servers, routers, multimedia systems, and recovery tools.

Future versions of Eagle Linux documentation will add instructions for including GUI capabilities and auto-detection of hardware, Angelo said.
