Linux management tools target device makers
Jun 12, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsA vendor of network-based provisioning and management tools for Linux systems has decided to market its products in source code form. Open Country said its OCM Provision and OCM Manager products can help Linux device developers build more manageable appliances, blades, desktop clients, and computing systems.
Previously, Open Country sold its software in binary, packaged form, through enterprise software distribution channels. It decided to switch to a source code marketing model after realizing that “most of our sales were done through OEM [original equipment manufacturer] and other channel partners,” it said.
Open Country said its OCM product suite can be used to provision, image, manage, monitor, inventory, update, and recover physical and virtual servers, desktops, blades, appliances, and devices. Currently, the suite supports about 20 Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Novell, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, Asianux, Red Flag, Haansoft, Co-Create, CS2C, TurboLinux, Miracle Linux, OpenLX, and Mandriva. Additionally, some OCM products support Microsoft Windows platforms, the company said.
CEO Laurent Gharda explained, “We evolved our business model in response to requests from customers who needed frequent ports to new hardware and to new operating systems, in addition to new functionality.”
Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, commented, “By offering OCM's source code to its licensees, Open Country is helping foster the growth of Linux into new classes of systems and devices that can be deployed and managed more easily.”
