Sonos has added support for Windows Media formats to its Linux-based whole-house audio distribution system, via a “one-button” firmware upgrade. The new “Sonos System Software 2.1” for the Sonos Digital Music System brings better interoperability with Windows Media Player 11 for Vista… and XP users.

The firmware upgrade also increases interoperability with a host of music download services, including the Real Networks Rhapsody, AOL Music Now, Audible.com, MTV Networks URGE, eMusic, Napster, Wal-Mart, Yahoo! Music Unlimited, and the Zune Marketplace, Sonos says.

The Sonos Digital Music System comprises small, Linux-based handheld remote control, along with up to 32 Linux-based ZonePlayers. The ZonePlayers are available with or without built-in amplifiers. The system is based on traditional wired or mesh wireless networking, and allows users to play the same or different content in various zones around the house. Supported sources include analog sources such as phonographs, in addition to digital music files anywhere on the network.

CEO John MacFarlane stated that Sonos is “determined to make the entire universe of music available to our customers.”
