Linux-ready AMC board rev’d to 2.16GHz
Sep 11, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsPerformance Technologies (PT) announced a faster version of its Intel Core 2 Duo-based AdvancedMC (AMC)-format single-board computer (SBC) for communications, security, data acquisition, and processing applications. The Linux-friendly AMC122 rev's the Core 2 Duo's clock rate to 2.16GHz, and boosts memory to 8GB.

Like the AMC121, which started sampling a year ago, the AMC122 board supports PT's own NexusWare Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) implementation, which is the only CGL implementation aside from those of Wind River and MontaVista to be registered for the Linux Foundation's CGL 4.0 specification.

Also like the AMC121, the AMC122 is based on the Intel Core 2 Duo and an Intel 3100 chipset, which are linked via a 667MHz FSB (front-side bus). The 3100 chipset offers both northbridge and southbridge functions within a single part. The AMC122 boosts the clock rate from 1.5GHz to 2.16GHz, and expands the 400MHz DDR2 RAM memory from the previous 2GB up to 4GB or 8GB. The module maintains the same “single-width, mid-sized” AMC format as its predescessor. AMC modules can be used as daughterboards on AdvancedTCA (ATCA) blades, or plugged directly into backplanes on MicroTCA (MTCA) systems such as PT's MTC5070.

The AMC122 is equipped with front-panel interfaces, including a USB port, a serial console port, and dual gigabit Ethernet ports (pictured at right). There is also an onboard mini-SD card site that offers program and operating system (OS) storage, enabling the board to boot without an external connection, says PT. The AMC122 is also said to support TCP/IP Offload (TOE), iSCSI, and RDMA on Ethernet channels, as well as Intel's SpeedStep power management technology. PT's AMC boards are delivered pre-integrated with NexusWare, but also support other Linux distribution, as well as Windows XP and Solaris 9/10, says the company.
Stated Performance Technologies senior product manager Tony Romero, “Our AMC122 [offers] a ready-to-use, very high performance and cost-effective solution for next generation MicroTCA-based applications, such as communication servers, security, and data acquisition and processing applications.”
Availability
The AMC122 is sampling now at an undisclosed price, says PT. More information may be available here.
