Linux Router Project throws in the towel

Jun 24, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 8 views

Dave Cinege, leader of the famed Linux Router Project (LRP) has proclaimed that “the operating system that helped to create the embedded Linux marketplace, the Linux Router Project, is dead.” Cinege, who describes himself as a semi-retired computer engineer, said he has become resigned to the reality that he will never be able to develop LRP into the operating system he felt it could have been.

Cinege noted that when he ceased development of LRP he had largely completed a new version 5.0 which included, within a memory footprint of ~8MB, features such as . . .

  • A new shell
  • A new shell scripting language
  • A new (universal) packaging scheme (would retrofit other OSes)
  • A true application management system
  • A new core process management system

While expressing bitterness at a lack of broader appreciation and support for the LRP project by many companies who benefited from it, Cinege acknowledged those companies who did sponsor LRP development.
