Linux sets its sight on the mobile world

Although Linux on the desktop still faces the challenge of overcoming the timidity of end users, the internals of a handheld device tend to be completely hidden. In a marketplace where Handspring produced a lower-cost device and immediately began outselling Palm, it's only a matter of time before a large manufacturer goes with the lower cost — and higher reliability — of Linux. Paul Maddox has written an article, which appears at Wireless Developers Network, in which he reviews a project to port Linux to the Psion Series 5 handheld. The project is called “Linux7k”, based on “7110”, the designation of the system chip used in the Psion.
