San Francisco, CA — (press release excerpt) — Macromedia, Inc. today announced the availability of the Macromedia Flash Player 5 Source Code SDK to enable device manufacturers and embedded platform providers to quickly and seamlessly port Macromedia Flash Player to a wide range of devices and platforms. The SDK also opens up new opportunities for the vast community of more than one million Macromedia Flash developers to create compelling content and powerful applications for the next generation of Internet-connected devices.

“Macromedia Flash is positioned to define the user experience on new devices and platforms, which need lightweight content and a flexible format that can adapt to smaller screens without sacrificing functionality,” said Peter Goldie, general manager, Macromedia. “This SDK will provide device manufacturers and platform providers with a competitive edge by enabling developers to affordably deliver rich, easy to use graphical interfaces as well as repurpose existing Web content to their devices.”

Using the Macromedia Flash Player Source Code SDK, Macromedia's embedded licensees, such as Phoenix Technologies and Siemens (see separate releases) are integrating Macromedia Flash Player into a broad spectrum of consumer electronics devices including mobile phones, PDAs, interactive TV systems, game machines, Internet appliances, Webpads, and in-room hotel entertainment systems. Macromedia Flash Player support on devices will open up exciting worlds for consumers and companies, by allowing them to experience applications such as city maps, event details, mobile online banking, real-time financial information, and remote email access.

The Macromedia Flash Player Source Code SDK includes reference platforms for Windows CE (Windows CE 3.0 and Windows CE 3.0 for PocketPC), Windows 32 (standalone and ActiveX), and Linux (Netscape plug-in). Licensees will receive the C++ source code for Macromedia Flash Player, as well as a full test suite and documentation to help port the player to new devices and platforms. Info on SDK licensing is available here.
