Maker of new Linux based set-top box nets $20M contract

The device, called the “Z Box,” is being tailor made for Zoned In Inc., for deployment by the end of 2000.
uniView's Linux-based Model 110 set-top box system, on which the Z Box is based, was introduced last month as an economical, entry level set-top box. The device is packaged in a VCR-like enclosure and comes with a 96-key infrared keyboard. uniView's data sheet for the Model 100 set-top box promotes the device's “Linux-based open embedded Internet operating system” as one of it's main selling points.
Hardware and software functions of the Model 100 include:
- Linux operating system with JavaScript support
- Automatic remote software upgrades
- Choice of internal 56kb/s modem or Ethernet
- 640×520 pixel TV graphics support
- Picture-in-Picture display
- Mono/stereo audio with MDI support
- Universal Smart Card reader
- Parallel printer port
