Digital Rights Management (DRM) is of critical importance for manufacturers of digital playback devices, according to Tony Walters, a director at security software vendor Certicom. In this detailed, technical whitepaper, Walters argues the case for building DRM-enabled devices on “trusted platforms” that provide security from the boot process upward.

The paper begins by reviewing the model developed by the Trusted Computing Group for how such trusted devices should function. Walters then goes on to describe how a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) can implement this functionality in an embedded device with a minimum of board real estate and power consumption.
