New York; LinuxWorld — (press release excerpt) — Metrowerks announced an enhancement to its CodeWarrior software development tools for the Linux operating system with new functionality to help Linux programmers increase their productivity and decrease their speed to market, including full Java support, native debugging, and concurrent and distributed compiling.

Metrowerks' CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE) is a comprehensive development tool set for Linux. The newest version is the first commercial IDE to target PowerPC processors. CodeWarrior for Linux, Version 6.0, is hosted on the most popular Linux distributions for x86 and PowerPC. The tools are expected to ship in March 2001.

The new CodeWarrior tools for Linux provide full support for Java programming, including Java Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools, which provide developers with a graphical layout editor that allows them to build a graphical user interface (GUI) for their Java programs with fast, drag-and-drop technology. Also included is support for native debugging, which allows CodeWarrior users to take advantage of a tightly integrated debugger customized to provide support for both the hardware platform and the software environment.

To further speed time to market for Linux developers, the new CodeWarrior tools feature concurrent compiling capabilities, which allow developers to compile multiple files simultaneously, and distributed compiling capabilities, which allow developers to compile across multiple networked machines.
