SUNNYVALE, Calif. — MontaVista Software Inc., maker of the Hard Hat Linux operating system for embedded computers, today names Bill Weinberg Director of Marketing. Weinberg brings 15 years of embedded software and real-time systems experience to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company. MontaVista is one of a handful but growing number of software companies making the popular open-source Linux OS available to developers of embedded computer systems.

“Hiring Bill is one more sign of MontaVista's move from being a start-up company to a significant supplier of the Linux operating system for embedded computing environments,” says Jim Ready, MontaVista's CEO. Weinberg joins MontaVista on the heels of recently hired VPs of Engineering and Sales. “The Linux market is growing at a rate of two to five times faster than that of any other operating system available and in use today and MontaVista is harnessing that growth for embedded developers” observes Ready.

Weinberg's expertise in embedded operating systems and software development tools includes engineering, marketing, and international sales. His most recent post was director of technical marketing for San Jose, Calif.-based Lynx Real-Time Systems Inc., where he managed the Lynx Java and embedded Web technologies marketing programs. Prior to Lynx, Weinberg was Acer Latin America's Brazil country manager, where he spearheaded Acer's introductions of Intel Pentium technology and Internet-ready personal computers for the Brazilian market. His embedded systems experience also includes product marketing and technical sales with Microtec Research Inc. (now Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division). Throughout his career, Weinberg has been a featured speaker at industry conferences and a frequent contributor to electronics and telecommunications publications.

MontaVista, which debuted its Hard Hat Linux distribution earlier this year, partners with Force Computers Inc., Motorola Computer Group, Ziatech Corp. and WinSystems Inc. Hard Hat runs on those companies' CompactPCI and single-board computer (SBC) platforms, popular choices for use in telecommunications and Internet appliance applications. MontaVista Software Inc., founded in 1999 by real-time operating system pioneer James Ready, delivers open-source software solutions for the worldwide embedded software market. Its principal offering is the Linux operating system tailored for the needs of embedded software developers. MontaVista products include Hard Hat Linux, a standard off-the-shelf binary distribution of Linux for Power PC and x86 architectures. Hard Hat Linux is supported by a comprehensive tool suite including optimizing compilers for C, C++ and other languages; high-level language debuggers; and performance monitoring tools. The company's Professional Technical Support Plan also provides Linux porting and customization services to customers worldwide.
