Motorola has shipped its millionth Internet Protocol set-top box (IP-STB), it announced last Friday. Linux has been the embedded software platform in “about 80 percent” of these devices, a company spokesperson said.

Motorola said its millionth IP-STB to ship was a VIP1510 model (pictured above), which runs Linux on a MIPS-based processor with hardware MPEG-2 acceleration. The company also offers 17xx-series IP-STBs with both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 acceleration, and a VIP1200 model, said to support standard- and high-definition (SD/HD) video, surround sound, and interactive applications such as multi-cast and VoD (video-on-demand).

Motorola two years ago acquired Kreatel Communications, a Swedish vendor of Linux-based IP-STBs. Kreatel's customer list reportedly included Telefonica in Spain, TeliaSonera in Sweden, and KPN in the Netherlands, adding to Motorola's claimed worldwide IPTV equipment customer list of 70 operators.

Doug Means, GM at Motorola, stated, “Communications companies worldwide are expanding into video through IPTV. We are helping redefine the IP video experience to include interactivity, personalization, and access to content.”

Along with IP-STBs, Motorola offers IP network infrastructure, connected home devices, video headend and transport equipment, and “industry-leading MPEG-4 encoding” equipment, the Texas-based communications equipment vendor said.
