Motorola upgrades its Linux for telecom apps
May 16, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsTempe, AZ — (press release excerpt) — Motorola Computer Group today announced that it expects to begin shipping version 2.0 of its Linux-based advanced high availability (HA) hardware and software platform in June, and expects to make available early access versions based on LynxOS and Windows 2000 in the same time frame. The comprehensive, carrier-grade solutions are intended to support the needs of developers of building mission-critical telecom applications.
Motorola's HA-Software, based on the company's CompactPCI-based CPX8000 hardware architecture, is targeted at operation administration and maintenance (OA&M) platforms, call server, IP gateway, signaling gateway and home location register applications using Linux operating systems; core infrastructure equipment applications using the LynxOS operating system; and voice and multi-media applications using the Windows 2000 operating system — all of which require consistent up-time.
This high level of reliability and availability may be achieved through HA-Software features such as the ability to “hot swap” components, allowance for equipment maintenance without interruption of service, and host-to-host failover — rapidly restoring service after a CPU failure. Additionally, the dual I/O architecture is designed to isolate any I/O card failure, ensuring that there will always be access to the network.
Key additions to Motorola's advanced HA Linux operating systems which are also included in the versions for LynxOS and Windows 2000 operating systems, include the following:
- Domain management services (DMS) — provides a set offacilities to manage the operation of non-system slot processors and related applications for Call Server applications
- Remote network services (RNS) — through the SNMP-based Network Management facility allows a network operator to visualize, monitor, and control the operation of an HA system using a browser based on Java
- Checkpoint agent — a general-purpose checkpointing service provided for applications to exchange state information and data to enable a standby application to quickly transition to active state and to provide network or subscriber services after an active application switchover
