Nat Semi puts Geode system-on-chip business unit on the block

National Semiconductor issued a progress report today regarding a series of “strategic profit-improvement actions” launched earlier this year. A key aspect of the plan, representing around half of a project cost savings of $120 million annually, is to eliminate two business units: the Information Appliance (IA) chip unit, which consists primarily of the href=”/products/PD6094486551.html” target=”new”>Geode system-on-chip processor family (used in a large number of consumer devices, especially set-top boxes and tablet PCs); and the Cellular Baseband business unit. The two product familes represent less than 5 percent of National's total revenue, the company said.

National said it has conferred with several prospective buyers of the IA business unit and is actively pursuing a sale, and will continue to support existing customer programs during the transition. “Although the company is engaged in discussions with potential buyers, it cannot give assurance that a sales transaction will take place,” the company statement noted.
