MontaVista has signed a deal with a network equipment provider (NEP) that supplies standardized hardware/software platforms to telecommunications equipment manufacturers (TEMs). The deal will enable Continuous Computing to ship MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) pre-installed on platforms for VoIP… (voice-over-IP) and 3G (third-generation) network equipment.

Continuous Computing sells “pre-integrated, pre-tested” hardware/software combinations that it calls Network Service-Ready Platforms (NSRPs). NSRPs are based on open hardware standards such as AdvancedTCA and Flex21 CompactPCI. NSRPs include operating system software, now to include CGE, as well as protocol stack software from Trillium and Continuous's own UpSuite High Availability (HA) middleware, available for Linux as of yesterday. NSRPs primarily target TEMs developing products for VoIP and 3G wireless networks.

Continuous VP of Business Development Simon Waters said, “[NSRPs] are an excellent choice for [TEMs] seeking to deploy new VoIP and 3G wireless applications. By pre-integrating [CGE], we lower the project risk and simplify the overall product development effort.”

MontaVista VP of Business Development Scott Jaffe said, “[CGE] [complies] with Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) and Service Availability (SA) Forum feature requirements, which are important benchmarks for Tier 1 customers.”
