San Jose, CA; Tokyo — (press release excerpt) — Lineo, Inc. and ACCESS Co. Ltd. announced today a license agreement to offer NetFront for Embedix, a full version of NetFront tailored for Embedix. This combination will reduce the amount of porting work required by OEM customers and accelerate their product development cycle. NetFront is a popular embedded Internet browser for consumer information appliances. Since its introduction in 1995, more than 10 million copies have been shipped for use in more than 70 different consumer information appliances, including the Sega Dreamcast and the NTT DoCoMo's i-mode Internet wireless phones.

The NetFront Internet browser was specifically developed to provide a high performance, cost-sensitive solution for information appliances with modest memory and microprocessor performance. NetFront requires less than 1.3MB ROM and 2MB RAM, supports full HTML 3.2 and selected features from HTML 4.0, frames, JavaScript, cookies, Web-printing and multi-languages. The browser is designed with a modular and scalable architecture that can be enhanced by application-specific modules and plug-ins. An independent user interface layer and design tool allows device manufacturers to create a unique look and feel for their product. In addition, optional modules including a JV-Lite2 Java(tm) virtual machine, SSL secure module, animation, and TV conference system are available for extension.
