New Japanese Internet-enabled TV standard likely to use Linux

Five major Japanese consumer electronics manufacturers have announced that they are developing a standard for Internet-enabled digital TVs, according to a report today from the Dow Jones news service.

The five companies, Matsushita, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, and Hitachi, said they hope to release the spec by September, 2003. The spec is expected to be based on the Japanese consumer electronics oriented version of embedded Linux that was announced by Matsushita and Sony last Fall.
