Tempe, AZ — (press release excerpt) — Motorola Computer Group today announced its new Low Profile Embedded Controller (LoPEC) board based on the PowerPC processor. This ATX form-factor embedded controller is designed to help original equipment manufacturers (OEM) of digital printing and imaging equipment gain competitive advantage by reducing time-to-market while containing costs. A combination of high image-processing performance, low physical profile, and low power consumption make LoPEC particularly well suited for integration into high-end digital printing and imaging equipment such as high-speed copiers, printers, multifunction peripherals and digital presses. Other LoPEC applications expected to include industries such as medical and industrial automation. LoPEC is supported by the MontaVista Hard Hat Linux (HHL) operating system.

To achieve the speed and performance required by tasks like intense computation and graphics usually provided by dedicated DSP, Motorola designed LoPEC with a special board configuration that enables AltiVec capabilities on the Motorola G4 processor'a technology that delivers outstanding image processing capability.

LoPEC includes two PMC expansion sites plus a conventional PCI slot. For further flexibility, users can add a ninety-degree riser card on which another PCI card can be added all while keeping the profile low enough to fit in a 1U chassis.

LoPEC features include:

  • Up to 9MB Flash Memory
  • 1 PCI and 2 PMC
  • 10/100 Ethernet

LoPEC is currently available at a suggested list price of $599.
