Network virtualization stack adds HA

Jul 21, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

VirtualLogix is shipping a High-Availability (HA) version of its carrier-grade virtualization software. Targeting networking and telecom OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), VirtualLogix's Carrier Grade Virtualization (CGV) combines VirtualLogix's virtualization stack for networking equipment with a new virtualization-enabled HA interface and Linux-ready tools for configuration, development,… and monitoring, says the company.

CGV is based on VLX-NI (network infrastructure), VirtualLogix's virtualization stack for networking equipment. It adds a new virtualization-enabled HA interface called vHA. Announced in May, vHA is billed as a way to provide fault recovery and system management services across virtual and physical domains.

VirtualLogix CGV offers hardware and guest OS management features, as well as application restart from a known state, which together are said to provide greater flexibility in managing HA systems and controlling availability levels. The technology supports Service Availability Forum (SAF) interfaces, making it compatible with existing SAF-compliant HA software, says VirtualLogix. As part of the CGV availability announcement, VirtualLogix also announced it was joining the Service Availability Forum (SAF).

VirtualLogix says its vHA technology can reduce the cost and complexity of maintaining carrier grade systems in edge and core network elements such as IP Multimedia System (IMS) nodes. HA technology has typically been limited to core carrier-grade processes, says the company, but VirtualLogix CGV aims to extend HA to simpler, single multicore systems with lesser HA requirements.

The VLX-NI technology underlying CGV enables simultaneous operation of multiple operating systems (OSes) — typically Linux and a real-time OS (RTOS) — for performance-critical telecom and datacom applications. As with the company's other VLX products, VLX-MH (“Mobile Handset”) and the VLX-DM (“Digital Media”) version designed for set-top boxes (STBs), VLX-NI comprises a small scheduler that enables guest OSes to access physical hardware subsystems directly, rather than through emulated hardware devices. VirtualLogix claims that VLX-NI helps reduce bill-of-material costs while encouraging legacy OS/application reuse, software failure containment, resource utilization, and license segregation.

Availability

VirtualLogix Carrier Grade Virtualization is available now, says the company. Pricing information was not available.
