New Site Enables S/W Development Cost Sharing

REDMOND, WA — Cosource.com, the Cooperative Marketplace for Open Source, today announced the official launch of their e-commerce site for users and developers of Open Source software. The launch comes at the end of their beta testing period, during which four separate projects were completed. Developers of these projects, including one developer based in Russia, were paid for their work via Cosource.com's collaborative funding mechanism, which allows buyers to share costs of programming services rather than paying all costs individually.

“Our goal,” said Bernie Thompson, Founder and CEO of Cosource.com, “is to empower users of Open Source software by providing a reverse-auction Internet venue for pooling resources in order to attract and do business with developers. The successful beta program just completed proves that users and developers of Open Source software from around the world can do business together for the mutual benefit of everyone.”

In addition to the launch, Cosource.com announced several new enhancements to their service, including a ratings mechanism that gives members the ability to post their impressions of the work of developers on the site. Other enhancements include improved site documentation and layout, along with a digest section for users to post individual reports about using the service.

Cosource.com also announced a working partnership with SourceForge — a new project which entered public beta in November, sponsored by VA Linux Systems. SourceForge is a massive Open Source hosting resource which provides web server space, version control tools, communication services and other programs for Open Source developers — administered via the Web with comprehensive security. Developers who are working on Cosource.com projects now have direct access to these SourceForge resources. Thompson added, “SourceForge is a valuable new service for open source development via the Internet. We are proud to be working with SourceForge to provide these powerful tools to our developers.”
