Mar 31, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 views

An announcement from the OpenZaurus project at handhelds.org . . .

I hereby announce the release of OpenZaurus 3.2. OZ (OpenZaurus) is an alternative Linux distribution for Handheld devices, primarily the Sharp SL-5000D and SL-5500 PDAs. Said distribution includes the Opie graphical environment, and numerous enhancements to both kernel and userspace when compared to the stock Embedix… distribution on the Zaurus.

This version currently, for compatibility reasons, includes the 2.4.6-rmk1-np2-embedix kernel, same as Sharp, with the exceptions of numerous applied patches.

Changes include . . .

  • Numerous Opie improvements across the board, examples:
    • on the fly rotation (no restart necessary)
    • new Crystal icon set
    • compatibility improvements for Sharp ROM apps
    • new applications, such as TinyKate, UBrowser, etc
  • New sound drivers. The headphone out driver now fully implements OSS, and therefore works properly with mplayer and other audio applications. The buzzer driver is now a proper dsp device, and can play normal sounds, mp3s, et cetera, though its quality is certainly lacking.
  • Newer versions of numerous base system applications and libraries
  • Newer versions of drivers, including orinoco/spectrum and HostAP
  • Numerous new applications, such as vim, screen, python, et cetera.
  • Bug fixes beyond count, please see the changelogs for details, as well as the Bug Tracking System.
