Opera adds Mot’s WAP to mobile phone browser
Feb 6, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 viewsOpera Software will add WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) support to its “full HTML” browser for mobile phones, thanks to a deal with Motorola to use Mot's Global Software Group's (GSG's) WAP stack. The companies will both market the resulting product, positioning it as a way for telco operators to transition to revenue-generating HTML content while still supporting legacy WAP content.
Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner commented that “today's agreement allows Opera to let operators and handset manufacturers gain revenue from past investments in WAP technology while embracing the numerous possibilities in what is new to mobile browsing,” but Opera declined to specify whether the WAP-enabled browser would appear on Motorola's Linux-based phones such as the A-760.
“We are pleased that together we can bring to market a cellular phone browser product that provides full HTML Internet access in a WAP environment,” added Amreesh Modi, vice president, systems solutions and products division, at Motorola GSG.
