Opera browser gaining popularity, importance, maker says
Aug 5, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOpera Software announced that over 10 million copies its Opera web browser have been downloaded from its website so far this year, a new record. This is in addition to the many millions more copies of Opera that were obtained from other download sites around the world, including in Europe, the U.S., and Japan, the company said.
“It is wonderful seeing that more and more users around the world are . . . discovering that there are alternatives to Microsoft's old browser technology,” commented Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner.
Tetzhner noted that news reports indicate that Microsoft will not further develop Internet Explorer, instead integrating it fully into their new upcoming “Longhorn” operating system to be released in a few years. Additionally, news reports also suggest that development of Netscape has been largely abandoned, he added. Tetzhner therefore foresees continued strong and increasing demand for Opera's browsers.
