Opera Software announced the first release of Opera 7 for Linux, bringing the Linux version of Opera's popular browser up to the same level of development as the current Windows version of Opera. Opera 7.11 for Linux includes several major new features and changes relative to Opera 6 for Linux, including a built-in email/news client which was previously only included in the Windows version of Opera, the… company said.

Besides adding a password manager and email/news client, Opera said the new FastForward, Rewind, Notes, and Slideshow functions of Opera 7 are not only new to Opera but also completely new to the world of browsing.

Additionally, Opera said its cross-platform development capability has advanced to where releases on multiple platforms can now occur within a few days of each other.

A freely downloadable version of Opera 7.11 is available here, which includes a banner ad at the top of each screen. The banner ad can be removed by registering and paying $39 (USD).
