Opie goes to LinuxTag
Jun 23, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsRepresentatives of the Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie) project will attend the Linuxtag Fair, which starts today in Karlsruhe, Germany. Opie is a free graphical framework and application stack for PDAs, handhelds, and Webpads. Opie representatives call Linuxtag “the world's biggest conference for Linux-based business and open source solutions.”
Chief Opie Evangelist Oliver Fels… reports: “Opie will demonstrate the capabilities of a free and open mobile platform for Linux, and its ability to handle professional class business application scenarios targeted at different hardware devices. Several scenarios will be presented, and Opie will demonstrate what users and developers can expect from the upcoming 1.2 release. The presentations will be given from Thursday to Saturday, at the KDE booth.”
Opie is a fork from Trolltech's Qtopia application stack for PDAs. Opie project leaders claim Opie is the most sophisticated open and completely free graphical platform for Linux based devices and PDAs. Opie includes a basic graphical application platform, along with productivity applications, developer tools, and synchronization software. Reference implementations are available for the HP iPAQ, Sharp Zaurus, and Siemens SimPad TabletPC.
