Oracle puts mobile devices on the grid

Jan 10, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Oracle is shipping tools for enterprise developers building grid applications that support mobile devices. The Oracle Database Lite 10g supports embedded Linux/Java devices, and includes application servers, software components, and tools. It targets defense, national security, health, public safety, sales force, and field service applications.

According to Oracle, mobile devices are deployed with increasing frequency in mission-critical systems. 10g is based on Oracle's Grid Computing infrastructure, and was designed to provide mobile, embedded systems with persistent access to enterprise information and applications without requiring continuous connectivity. It can scale to thousands of concurrent users, Oracle claims.

According to Oracle, Database Lite 10g lets mobile users work effectively in areas where network coverage is unavailable, unreliable, or insecure, thanks to a bi-directional synchronization server with a “publication and subscription-based model.” The product is transport agnostic, and supports LAN, wireless, satellite, or radio networks.

Database Lite 10g includes a Web-based console for central management of applications, systems, security, and devices, as well as diagnostics, lockdown, and user provisioning and identity management, Oracle says. It also includes a development environment supporting Java, C/C++, and Visual Studio applications. It works with third-party development environments that include Oracle JDeveloper 10g and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.

Meta Group Analyst Jack Gold said, “As mobile devices transition from purely personal devices to capable business tools, organizations must deploy applications built on a flexible business-class platform capable of supporting current user needs, while allowing future enhancements and connectivity for a variety of business requirements.”

Oracle's CTO of mobile and wireless products, Jacob Christfort, said, “Oracle Database Lite 10g offers advances in scalability, reliability, and security consistent with the overall Oracle 10g technology stack.”

Oracle Database Lite 10g is available now, priced at $100 per named user. An evaluation download is available here.
