O’Reilly launches online code repository
Apr 6, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsO'Reilly Media and open source IT services company SpikeSource have teamed up on a new online source code repository that includes mobile device software. The just-launched “CodeZoo” site offers downloads and descriptions, reviews, comments, and material drawn from O'Reilly books, articles, blogs, and conference presentations, the publisher says.
According to O'Reilly, CodeZoo will be sponsored exclusively by SpikeSource, an open source-oriented IT services company run by former Java product manager and Marimba co-founder Kim Polese. CodeZoo will integrate tightly with SpikeSource's SpikeInfo project status tracking service, according to O'Reilly.
In addition to a “Mobile Device” software category, the CodeZoo offers software in the following categories:
- Business Systems
- Commercial Software Interfaces
- Data Formats
- Database
- Development Utilities
- Games and Entertainment
- Language Interfaces
- Media

- Security
- Server Packages
- System Interfaces
- User Interfaces
- Web Programming
- XML
CodeZoo's site manager, Marc Hedlund, said, “CodeZoo brings [code] together in one place, sorts out the good code from the bad, and augments the code with information that helps developers use the code wisely.”
Polese said, “Developers need better search and discover repositories to piece together all the great code that exists.”
