The book's authors include Jonathon Corbet, a kernel contributor and executive editor of Linux Weekly News; Allessandro Rubini, a kernel contributor and central figure in the Italian Linux community; and Greg Kroah-Hartman, who maintains the USB, PCI, and driver core subsystems.
According to O'Reilly, the book has been thoroughly revised to cover changes to the 2.6 kernel that rationalize and simplify several common tasks, including plug-and-play, interacting with userspace through the sysfs file system, and management of multiple devices on standard buses.
“The 2.6 kernel is vastly different, internally, from its predecessors. This update is a necessary tool for programmers trying to work with current kernels and follow the kernel's evolution,” said Corbet.
“I'm excited by what I witness in the embedded arena. Ideas are moving fast these days,” said Rubini.
The 636-page book is available now direct from O'Reilly, priced at $39.95 US. It is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.
