Playing the embedded Linux numbers game
Jul 5, 2001 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsMontaVista has apparently challenged Lineo's claim to support nearly 100 different embedded processors, according to an article at Linuxgram.com. Linuxgram writes . . .
“Embedded Linux OS houses MontaVista Software and Lineo are slugging it out over processor and board support.”
“At issue is Lineo's claim that its suite of embedded operating systems, Embedix, uClinux, and RTXC, support nearly a 100 chips. 'Lineo supports a substantial number of processors that other embedded software providers can't accommodate,' boasts Lineo senior VP of sales and marketing Rich Larsen.”
” 'They claim support for more processors than they do boards,' responds MontaVista's director of strategy Bill Weinberg. 'I had a feeling they were playing a counting game.' According to Weinberg, MontaVista counts only the processors that are on the boards that it has done QA on and supports explicitly. 'We're much more conservative,' Weinberg claims. . .”
