Power.org gains VC advisory board

Dec 13, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

A group of venture capitalists (VCs) has formed an investment advisory board to serve Power.org, a community organization devoted to IBM's Power architecture. The Power.org Venture Capitalist Advisory Board says it aims to drive increased investments in Power-focused companies.

Power.org is a community organization launched in December, 2004, shortly after IBM adopted a Linux-like open governance model” for the Power architecture. The organization's membership includes a dozen VCs, it says, along with thirteen technology companies that have received venture funding so far.

Power.org says the Power architecture has achieved notable success recently in gaming applications, such as the Cell processor that will power Sony's Playstation 3. The Cell processor's chief architect recently confirmed that IBM will open the non-Power-based portions of the Cell architecture, “like Power.”

The newly formed Power.org Venture Capitalist Advisory Board will “analyze and validate new disruptive hardware technologies and strategies,” it says. It will comprise:

  • David Liddle, Managing Partner, USVP
  • Lip Bu Tan, Managing Partner, Walden International
  • Robert Jelski, Partner, 3i Ventures
  • Rob Chandra, General Partner, Bessemer
  • Carl Everett, Partner, Accel Partners

Power.org Chairman Nigel Beck stated, “Startups are the key ingredient of our collaborative innovation model.”

Additionally, Power.org announced three new design and services members today, including IP-Extreme, Nallatech, and Azul Systems.
