FSMLabs says its real-time Linux distributions now support AMD64. RTLinuxPro and Carrier Grade RTLinux support AMD Opteron, Athlon 64, and Turion 64 chips. Targeted applications include communications blades, dedicated networking and security systems, instrumentation and control hardware, high performance simulation, and high resolution imaging, according to the company.

FSMLabs says RTLinux lets device OEMs develop and deploy applications requiring both hard real-time responsiveness, and a standards-based open computing platform like Linux. It hopes support for AMD's 32- and 64-bit processors will help the distribution appeal to OEMs and TEMs (telecommunications equipment providers) building a variety of next-generation voice and data applications.

FSMLabs in May announced Carrier Grade RTLinux, which is registered with the OSDL as compliant with the Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 specification. The company says Carrier Grade RTLinux can provide TEMs using AMD chips with standards compliance, availability, serviceability, security, and COTS hardware support.

FSMLabs Carrier Grade RTLinux includes the company's real-time RTCore POSIX nano-kernel, along with a standard 2.6 Linux distribution. It also includes value-added technology for real-time threading and high-performance networking. Addtionally, the distribution is validated using state-of-the-art testing and quality assurance systems, FSMLabs claims.

Additional claimed differentiating features of Carrier Grade RTLinux include:

• Hard real-time response for interrupt code and user application threads
• Native support for the 32- and 64-bit AMD64 processors
• SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) support for multi-core AMD processors
• Memory-protected real-time application threads and zero-copy real-time networking
• Superior compliance to Linux Standards Base, POSIX, and other Priority I OSDL Carrier Grade Linux requirements

AMD's director of 64-bit embedded markets, David Rich, said, “The real-time Linux offerings from FSMLabs can give x86-based embedded system designers a reliable, customizable, and high-performance OS.”

CEO Victor Yodaiken says FSMLabs has customers using RTLinux for simulation systems and imaging applications, high speed routers, and “carrier-class telephony systems with tightly-coupled control and data planes.” Such applications require 64-bit addressing and “lots of compute power,” Yodaiken adds.

Availability

RTLinuxPro and Carrier Grade RTLinuxPro for AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon 64, and AMD Turion 64 processors are available now from FSMLabs and its channel partners. The distributions support single- and dual-core AMD CPUs on most COTS motherboards. However, a complete list of supported hardware is available from FSMLabs.
