Red Hat embedded Linux taps Jabber messaging technology
Sep 26, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsESC, San Jose, CA — (press release excerpt) — Jabber.com, Inc., a subsidiary of Webb Interactive Services, Inc., today announced a strategic relationship with Red Hat to deliver real-time messaging infrastructure to Red Hat embedded Linux. The new Jabber compatibility is designed to make it easy for developers of embedded Linux applications to add real-time messaging and XML routing to their… applications.
As with e-mail, enterprises and service providers using Jabber can install, operate, control, and brand their Jabber system and client software. Every Jabber installation communicates with every other Jabber system to create a Jabber network similar to today's email network.
Jabber is the only open source, XML-based platform for extensible instant messaging applications. XML is an extensible markup language similar to HTML, the language used for producing most Web pages. Unlike HTML, however, XML is much more structured, flexible, and functional in a business environment as it has the inherent ability to define the data it contains, in addition to formatting its presentation.
