REDSonic dumps the dongle

Santa Ana, CA — (press release excerpt) — REDSonic, Inc., today announced a product policy change in response to the distinctly positive developer review of RED-Builder 2.0 XE by Jerry Epplin of LinuxDevices.com.

RED-Builder 2.0 XE is REDSonic's latest version of the innovative flagship embedded Linux development tool. With an easy-to-use graphical interface, RED-Builder allows a developer to customize, configure, build, and debug embedded Linux devices and systems with point-and-click simplicity. Compared to other tools on the market today, RED-Builder's adaptable design allows a user to create their own x86 Linux board support packages (BSPs), or integrate an existing BSP directly into the tool through the unique 'plug-in' framework. Jerry Epplin commented on these and other RED-Builder features as “remarkably flexible and extensible.”

Despite the overwhelming positive comments, the review was tempered by comments on the inclusion of a software protection 'dongle.' (A security dongle is a hardware device that prevents unlicensed copying of commercial software products.)

“Representing a product on a global basis as popular as RED-Builder requires a measure of protection to ensure that REDSonic IP is safeguarded in regions well-known for rampant software piracy,” commented Kevin Tobin, REDSonic's Director of Sales, on the dongle policy. “To date, our existing customers, partners, and investors, have communicated that this has been a reasonable position for a fiscally responsible commercial software vendor to undertake. However, in response to comments within the Linux community and Jerry Epplin's observation that if REDSonic removes the dongle from the offering, '(they) may well have one of the most attractive Embedded Linux toolkits available”, REDSonic (was encouraged) to make immediately available a 'dongle-free' version of RED-Builder.”

This new REDSonic offering will be made available at special discounted prices for attendees visting the booth #4562 at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, March 13th – March 15th.
