RTLinux now available on preconfigured servers for control apps

The Athlon and P4 dual processor workstations from SW Technology are fully loaded and ready to run with RTLinux/Pro Dev Kit 1.1. from FSMLabs. FSMLabs measurements show that for the Athlon workstations have a RTCore Index of 13 microseconds and the P4 workstations have an index of 17 microseconds. Real-time performance can be further improved using the “reserve CPU” capability of RTLinux Pro to suspend Linux execution on a processor: often allowing a real-time application to run in the cache of the reserved CPU.
RTLinux/Pro provides FSMLabs' RTCore POSIX PS51 robust “hard” real-time kernel with a full embedded Linux development system. RTCore employs a patented dual kernel technique to run Linux or BSD Unix as applications. Hard real-time software runs at hardware speeds while the full power of an open-source UNIX is available to non-real-time components. RTLinux/Pro is used for everything from satellite controllers, telescopes, and jet engine test stands to routers and computer graphics. RTLinux/Pro runs on a wide range of platforms from high end clusters of multiprocessor P4s/Athlons to low power devices like the MPC860, Elan 520, and ARM7.
The RTCore Index is the worst case error for a periodic task on a heavily loaded system including the interrupt latency, the overhead of the scheduling code, and the cost of a context switch. FSMLabs computes the Index by placing test systems under a heavy non-real-time load and running a 1 millisecond periodic real-time thread for at least 24 hours. The Index measures something that is meaningful for real applications: the interval between a timing event and the start of application code.
