Kontron announced a fanless, EN50155-compliant panel PC aimed at the railway and transportation markets, featuring a 10.4-inch capacitive touchscreen and Intel Atom E6xx processors. The rugged Kontron Display Computer HMITR is equipped with 1GB soldered RAM, up to 32GB NAND flash, Mini-PCIe expansion, extended temperature range support, and I/O that includes Ethernet, USB 2.0, serial, and CAN interfaces.

The Kontron Display Computer HMITR is optimized for UIC 612-0x railway applications, but is also suitable for a variety of traffic and transportation industries, as well as military, medical, and industrial automation applications, says Kontron.

Typical railway applications include Driver Display Systems (DDS) that comply with the UIC 612-0x standard. Here, the panel PC carries out diagnostic and control functions, such as Train Radio Display (TRD), Technical and Diagnostic Display (TDD), Control and Command Display (CCD), and Electronic Timetable Display (ETD), says Kontron.

The long-term available HMITR is said to meet railway standards including EN50155, EN50121-3-2, EN61373, and EN60950, while also offering compliance with CEN TS 45545-1.

The device is said to provide IP65 protection on the front side to safeguard against dust and water. It also supports operating temperatures of -20 to 70 deg. C (-4 to 158 deg. F), with limited operation support ranging from –30 to 85 deg. C, compliant with EN50155 T3, says the company.

The HMITR is built around the new Intel Atom E6xx processors, including the fastest 1.6GHz models. The panel PC also includes the Intel Platform Controller Hub EG20T, as well as 1GB of soldered-on DDR2 RAM, says Kontron. An SD card slot is available, as well as optional 16GB or 32GB NAND flash solid-state disks (SSD), says the company.

The 10.4-inch capacitive touch display offers a resolution of 800 x 600, and includes a long-life LED backlight that automatically adapts its brightness to the ambient lighting for best contrast, says Kontron. The touchscreen capability can be swapped out for an optional 32 hard-key touch panel or UIC keyboard, says the company. LEDs are also said to be available.

The HMITR is equipped with three 10/100 Ethernet ports and three USB 2.0 ports, with two of each interface available with M12 compliance, says Kontron. Other I/O is said to include four RS232/422 serial interfaces (two of which offer M12 support), as well as GPIO, a CAN Layer2 interface, a loudspeaker connector (D-SUB25), and audio line-in/out.

Expansion is offered via dual PCI Express (PCIe) Mini Card slots supporting available WLAN, GSM, MVB, and GPS options. A SIM card slot is also said to be available, as well as a watchdog timer and a temperature sensor.

The HMITR measures 12.2 x 8.4 x 3.7 inches (310 x 214 x 95mm) and weighs 6.67 pounds (3 kg), says Kontron. Running on an EN50155 compliant power supply with either 24 or 72/100 V DC power, the HMITR is said to draw 25 Watts under typical operation, or 50 Watts when used with an active heater.

The Kontron Display Computer HMITR offers standard support for Linux, VxWorks, and Windows XP/XPe, with QNX support said to be optional. Application-specific OEM versions of the system can be developed on request, says the company.
