Internet appliance and industrial computer manufacturer ICP Electronics Inc. (IEI) has launched a sub-$1,000 web mail server, router, and firewall based on embedded Linux and targeting the small business market. The WMS-2208R boots embedded Linux firmware from Flash memory, and a configuration reset switch restores state.

The device offers up to 400GB of redundant mail storage space, with room for two 3.5-inch IDE drives. The box is based on a National Semiconductor GX1 processor running at 300 MHz. It boots from 32MB of Flash, into 128MB of DRAM.

The device supports POP3, SMTP, MAP4, and MIME mail standards. Supported languages include English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

IEI says that the complexity and high cost of mail management leads many small businesses to outsource mail services to an ISP, which makes the company look unprofessional and limits management functions. The WMS-2208R provides a plug-n-play solution with intelligent mail serving software that can be easily setup up and run within a few minutes, the company claims.

IEI has incorporated NAS (Network Attached Storage) technology from its other products, providing up to 400 GB mail storage with double mail protection through RAID 0/1, along with scheduled remote replication.

Built-in Web Mail features including addressbook, message search, and vacation auto-replies offer seamless mail access from anywhere. Additional features include a mail logger, anti-spam filters, mail block, forward, mailbox quotas, and more.

Additionally, the device incorporates a packet-filtering firewall, an eight-port ADSL/Cable router, print server (usb/parallel printer support), and Dynamic DNS (DDNS) support. It can provide Web content filtering, a virtual server, and a DMZ (de-militarized zone) host.

The device runs headless, and is configurable through a Web interface or a small integrated LCD panel display. It supports SNMP management,

IEI will display the device during CES 2004 in Las Vegas (Jan. 8-11, 2004), at IEI booth #127 in North Hall. More information is available online.
