SMSC releases open source Linux Ethernet driver
May 30, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 44 viewsHauppauge, NY — (press release excerpt) — Standard Microsystems Corporation announced availability of a Linux (Red Hat v7.0) and a VxWorks driver for its LAN91C111 Non-PCI 10/100 Mbps Single Chip Ethernet MAC+PHY Controller. The Linux driver, written for the x86 architecture, is open-source under the GNU public license and can be downloaded from the SMSC web site at
The open source distribution of the Linux driver facilitates application-specific porting of the driver to the major processor architectures and embedded RTOS environments. The VxWorks driver, also written for x86 architecture, is proprietary with object code available from the SMSC web site and source code available to customers through SMSC's SRC9000 royalty free Software License Agreement. The VxWorks driver is compliant with Wind River Systems' proprietary Enhanced Network Driver architecture.
The LAN91C111 is a Non-PCI fast Ethernet controller for embedded systems that provides a configurable, generic bus interface compatible with popular embedded processor host interfaces, including ARM, Hitachi SH, Power PC, ColdFire, and MIPS. Since the Bus Interface Unit is very flexible, the LAN91C111 is ideal for many different environments and access modes, for example, 32-bit or 16-bit mode, synchronous or asynchronous mode, or burst or non-burst mode. System designers can take advantage of the flexible interface to configure the chip to match their application requirements.
