SnapGear adds Intel network processor support to free embedded Linux distro

Aug 5, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

SnapGear announced new embedded Linux support for Intel's XScale processors. Intel will ship SnapGear's embedded Linux distribution with development boards for the Intel IXP4XX network processor product line, and SnapGear will provide free downloads of the IXP4XX from its website, the company said.

SnapGear offers an embedded Linux development environment that targets the development of VPN firewall appliances and is also used as the basis of the company's own VPN/firewall devices. Developers can download the SnapGear embedded Linux distribution, including a full uClinux distribution, free of charge at www.snapgear.org.

SnapGear said its embedded Linux distribution supports deeply embedded microprocessors with or without MMU (memory management unit), and is unique in providing commercial quality tool chains and processor support in a freely downloadable open source format.

The new IXP4XX network processor support is available immediately from Intel or SnapGear, along with a variety of development platforms.
