Sun blesses Java phone
May 17, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsSavaJe, a spinoff of Lucent Technologies, threw its hat — or, rather, cellphone — into the ring at the 2006 JavaOne Conference in San Francisco this week, with the unveiling of a “sophisticated” handset that runs a unique, Java-centric operating system. The Jasper S20 mobile phone, made by Group Sense Limited PDA (GSPDA) and running SavaJe's Java-based SavaJe Mobile Platform, also garnered JavaOne's “Device of the Show” honors.
The Jasper S20 does not run Java on bare metal; it has a kernel written in C. However, its architecture is said to be greatly simplified, compared to phones that run full-featured OSes such as Linux, Symbian, or Windows Mobile.
