Sun is shipping an AMD-based blade server with a choice of MontaVista carrier-grade Linux, or Solaris. The Netra CT900 is based on the open standard AdvancedTCA architecture and is powered by an AMD Opteron processor. It is available with MontaVista's Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) Linux, or Sun's Solaris 10.

Sun is also shipping an UltraSPARC/Solaris ATCA processor blade that can be used in CT900 servers running either Linux or Solaris, Sun says. The Netra CP3010 UltraSPARC (pictured at right) is Sun's first ATCA based on dual UltraSPARC IIIi processors.

Additionally, Sun plans to ship this quarter an AMD dual-core Opteron based blade processor called the Netra CP3020, along with a 3.0 version of its Netra High Availability Suite (NHAS). Like MontaVista CGE, NHAS 3.0 will comply with SAF (service availability forum) middleware standards, Sun says.

Sun says MontaVista has delivered optimized ports of its CGE Linux environment for both the AMD-based blade server and processor blade. Sun announced last September that MontaVista was porting CGE to forthcoming AMD-based ATCA products.

Sun says its new Netra products will be used in “next-generation, high-bandwidth telecom network infrastructure, IP-based service architectures, and new revenue-generating services, such as push-to-talk, presence, and IPTV.” Sun claims its servers are used by “all of the top 10 NEPs” (network equipment providers) worldwide, and that telecom represents its largest vertical market.

MontaVista's VP of worldwide sales, Mark Milazzo, stated, “[NEPs] are looking to [CGE] for next generation infrastructures. We are very excited about Sun's decision to offer MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition for its ATCA blade platform. Sun is recognized as a leader in carrier grade server platforms.”

Additionally, Sun announced that 20 ISVs/IHVs (independent hardware and software vendors) have pledged support for its new Netra ATCA blade server products, including MontaVista competitor Wind River.

Availability

The Netra CT900 ATCA blade server and Netra CP3010 UltraSPARC ATCA blade are shipping now. The Netra CP3020 AMD Opteron processor-based ATCA blade, and Netra High Availability Suite (NHAS) 3.0 are scheduled to ship in second quarter of 2006.
