SuSE CTO clarifies SuSE’s handheld Linux strategy
Jan 8, 2001 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsSubsequent to a recent ZDNet story about a growing interest by SuSE in embedded Linux, LinuxDevices.com contacted SuSE's Chief Technology Officer, Dirk Hohndel, for further clarification of his company's plans with respect to the handheld and embedded Linux markets. Hohndel provided the following statement . . .
SuSE Linux AG's core business continues to be the server and desktop markets.
In its incarnation as a server operating system, SuSE Linux is deployed by professional users for a large variety of different tasks. Not only does SuSE offer these users a complete set of IT services ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of their Linux system, SuSE also offers a growing number of custom made, turn-key software packages as well as one-stop solutions.
A series of improvements over the past 12 months have led to a more user-friendly Linux. For this reason, we have recently seen an increase in the deployment of SuSE Linux as a desktop operating system, by both end-users and businesses.
It is in this context that SuSE follows the developments in the handheld arena with great interest. Special emphasis lies on the upcoming generation of powerful mobile devices that are expected to complement the traditional functionality of desktop systems and, over time, replace parts of it.
Being a stable, flexible, and affordable operating system, Linux has an opportunity to establish itself as a standard in this new market segment. SuSE continues to maintain and enhance its existing technology base and become a dominant force in this new market. A solid business model as well as the cooperation of leading hardware manufacturers is key to our success.
