TechWeb: SGI Unveils Linux Supercomputer

“PALO ALTO, Calif. — Computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. unveiled a new type of supercomputer based on Intel chips and the Linux operating system instead of its own proprietary technology. It said the new design will help it make machines that are more powerful than anything now on the market, while also driving down costs to make them affordable to a larger group of customers. 'We're really pumped up about it,' said Beau Vrolyk, senior vice president of SGI's product group. 'It represents the beginning of a whole new generation of supercomputer' continued Vrolyk.”
